Business Needs: Smith Barney’s Online Management System (OMS) is mission critical to the firm and as such needs to be more dynamically available. Additionally, the system is heavily online transaction oriented, and performance and response time had to be improved. Any project to enhance the system must cause no service disruptions, which could have grave consequences to customers, Salomon Smith Barney, and without exaggerating, the world's major stock markets.
Technical Needs: The OMS includes, built into the program code, years of knowledge and experience of Salomon Smith Barney's investment professionals. The cost, risk, and time in replacing or reprogramming this key system and the procedures surrounding it, is formidable. Consequently it was decided to migrate the IDMS database used by the OMS to DB2 in order to gain the benefits of the technical capabilities of the relational database. The OMS included 500 batch and online programs, 30 different database record types, and approximately 2 GB of data.
Solution: The BluePhoenix automated tool migrated the IDMS database to DB2 while preserving the integrity of the OMS. The organization's standards, DBA rules, and specific system practices were integrated into the tool so that it automatically applied them during the design of the relational schema and during the creation of the new SQL code that replaced the IDMS DML. New relational DB2 databases were automatically created plus effective in-stream SQL written enabling data access. The final step consisted in the migration of the data, fully meeting the objectives of Salomon Smith Barney. Ongoing program maintenance continued since the technology and methodology only require a minimal freeze period associated with the final acceptance test. |
