Customer: Fortis Bank is a major financial group in the Benelux region and the eighth largest bank in Europe, with total assets in excess of 250 billion euro.
Business Needs: At the beginning of 1999, the Fortis group started the process of merging five banks into one. The merger included consolidating all the disparate IT systems.

Technical Needs: One of Fortis’ main concerns with regards to the merger of the IT systems was the naming consistency within the different software components. The names used in APS, a program generating language, were especially problematic, as they were interwoven throughout the system components. Fortis' experience with previous conversions of APS program groups, requiring the compiler to identify the unsolved problems, showed that bringing them to an "acceptable" level of accuracy took a considerable amount of time. With close to 500 of these groups of APS programs, the immensity of the task appeared to be insurmountable.
Solution: Following a thorough assessment of the IT infrastructure using BluePhoenix IT Discovery, the automated BluePhoenix StandardsEnabler solution was applied with the specific requirements needed by Fortis. With its analyst-friendly screens controlling the process the solution not only made the required changes, but also ensured that these changes did not conflict with any other component within the group of APS programs. The end result—conversion of an APS group now takes about 10% of the time previously required, at an exceptional level of accuracy (greater than 95%), results that can only be achieved through automation.
Partner: The partner for this project was DMR who contributed their project management expertise in order to coordinate the work, plus provided technical support and project staff to execute the naming convention processes designed for Fortis Bank.
