Phoenix Group

Customer: The Phoenix Group is the third largest insurance group in Israel. Phoenix covers all general insurance lines of business, including motor vehicle, property, liability, and health care.

Business Needs: In order to compete successfully in the insurance industry, Phoenix needed to open its systems via modern technology.

Technical Needs: The Data General (DG) MV platform needed to be migrated to a Hewlett-Packard Unix (HP-UX) with an Oracle relational database. This process required replacing all unique DG-COBOL commands and/or syntax with the appropriate commands in Micro Focus (MF) COBOL, and replacing all the DG-SQL "unique syntax" of embedded-SQL statements with Oracle's syntax of embedded SQL.

Solution (Part I): The BluePhoenix IT Discovery solution was used to map both source and target systems, providing a layout of the business rules used on both ends. Then, the BluePhoenix DataMigrator tool was used to migrate over 300 DG-SQL tables to Oracle tables and 18 Info's-DG files to over 60 Oracle tables. The solution included managing the definitions of the source data structures (collected from the DG-SQL dictionary), the target data definitions, and the mappings between the two. Various conversions and mapping of data were defined in order to support unique DG-SQL features, and a set of test programs was written in order to compare the data in the source DG-SQL tables and the Oracle tables.

Solution (Part II): While fully preserving the application functionality, the BluePhoenix LanguageMigrator solution migrated over 2,000 DG-COBOL server programs to Micro Focus COBOL, over 6,000 CLIs to Unix shells, and over 1,000 Mosaic screens to UNIFACE.
