Business Needs: Conversion of financial and accounting systems from Italian Lira to the euro currency including the handling of programs, screens, files, databases, and historical data.
IT Needs: The systems included MVS, CICS, DLI, and DB2; the applications requiring renovation were both online and batch, and were written in COBOL and PL/I. The challenge included locating all the data fields within the programs that are related to currency including amount fields and conversion rates. The remediation and conversion phase would have to include the creation of additional fields where warranted, modification of the program logic, and restructuring of the data files and databases to include the additional data.
Solution: First, the BluePhoenix IT Discovery solution was used to perform a global assessment of eight main applications, which contained 12,000 programs comprising about 13,000,000 lines of code. Then, the BluePhoenix EuroEnabler tool was used to perform a “big bang” conversion, customized to Reale Mutua’s specific needs. All constants and literals in the programs were changed and replaced by euro values.
Monetary fields without decimal digits were modified to have two decimal digits without expanding the size of the field. EuroEnabler then analyzed all the data elements (DLI databases, DB2 databases, VSAM, and sequential files) and automatically generated about 800 data-conversion programs. In rare cases, for very specific logic that applied to one or two files, manual modifications were made to the programs. The EuroEnabler repository greatly supported the testing phase, providing detailed data, consequently streamlining the process.
