Business Needs: Safeway needed to upgrade to COBOL/LE since IBM no longer supports non-LE versions of their third generation languages. LE provides a single run-time environment and is required for organizations wanting to move to z/OS.
IT Needs: Safeway's environment contained multiple versions of CICS, Telon, DB2, COBOL, and Assembler, each compiled with different parameters. All platforms had to be unified to the most recent LE environment version.
Solution: In the inventory phase, the BluePhoenix IT Discovery solution identified the links between the COBOL programs and Assembler. A large-scale cleanup was carried out and about 1,000 programs and their related JCL and PROCs were deleted from the project scope. Additionally, Safeway’s mainframe computer environment was scanned for COBOL programs that were not at the COBOL/390 level.
In the conversion phase, the BluePhoenix LanguageMigrator tool was used to migrate those programs to COBOL/390 LE. The Telon programs were converted to the LE standard in a similar fashion. There were approximately 4,400 programs requiring remediation. To assist the client in the process of building the testing environments, a process of downloading files from production to test environment was defined, reducing the time of the overall testing phase. |
