Listen to this Executive Podcast interview by Business Trends Quarterly (BTQ) magazine. Legacy Modernization: Escape to the Virtual Worlds

by Len Erlikh, CTO, BluePhoenix Solutions
With all the focus on legacy modernization techniques, approaches, and alternatives, we often miss a key point: What kind of modern system are we really trying to build and what is our goal? To loosely paraphrase a classical line from Alice in Wonderland: “If you don’t know where you’re going, it really doesn’t matter how you get there.” In the long run, modernized systems that are founded on a solid hardware/software architectural platform with streamlined total cost of ownership (TCO) will determine the true success of your legacy modernization initiatives.
Recently, budget-minded IT organizations have begun aggressively looking at virtualization as the platform of choice to build systems with an optimal TCO profile. What is virtualization anyway and, more to the point, can it be considered as the destination of choice for your legacy modernization initiatives?
Legacy Modernization: Tight Budgets, Right Choices

by Len Erlikh, CTO, BluePhoenix Solutions
The full force of the financial crisis is squarely upon us. This year, very few IT organizations managed to avoid a multitude of project cuts and cost reduction initiatives. More than at any other time in this industry’s history, budgetary constraints were the primary drivers in shaping CIOs’ agendas for setting both short- and long-term organizational priorities. Throughout the industry, the feeling persists that this relentless budget squeeze is making our IT organizations weaker and is negatively impacting our ability to properly address the full spectrum of enterprise computing needs.
Outsourcing in Times of Financial Crisis: Is Your Team in or Out?

by Len Erlikh, CTO, BluePhoenix Solutions
With the financial crisis in full force and unemployment rates rapidly approaching double digits, the moral dilemma of outsourcing — home team loyalty vs. economic benefit — again takes center stage. The sluggish economy and a continuous search for cost savings are driving an increasing share of IT budgets to offshore outsourcing. In 2008, Indian outsourcers alone delivered billions of dollars worth of IT services while the growing number of offshore outsourcing providers in Russia, China, and a dozen more aspiring contenders are joining in the quest for a share of the global IT labor market.
