VB, C# Can Access iSeries Lightning Fast With DCS
San Antonio, TX Aug 25, 2004 -- ASNA is now shipping their DataGate Component Suite (DCS) for .NET. This is the first product suite that provides VB.NET and C# programmers with lightning fast access to the iSeries platform.
VB.NET and C# programmers who use OLE DB experience frustratingly slow performance when the number of users accessing enterprise data on their iSeries increases. ASNA's DCS is at least five times as fast as OLE DB on the iSeries and orders of magnitude faster than that as users increase. Also, DCS CPU usage is only a fraction of OLE DB or ADO usage as the number of users increases.

Performance gains are realized by using ASNA's own OS/400-based host server program rather than the OS/400-provided server program that OLE DB uses. The DataGate host server respects all server-side facilities such as referential integrity and triggers and obeys all OS/400-imposed user authorities and security. Securities and authorities are imposed against whatever user profile your DCS-driven app uses to gain iSeries access. The DCS client component is 100% managed MSIL .NET assemblies and runs on either individual Windows desktops or Windows servers for use with Web applications.
Although DCS is targeted at VB.NET and C# programmers, it works with other .NET languages such as Delphi or C++. Features provided by DCS include:
Read/write access to physical and logical files
Calling OS/400 program objects
Work with Open Query file
Manage and use library lists
Native access from .NET language to iSeries data storage types such *Packed and *Zoned
Database, file, and member overrides
Access to all RPG-like record-level access verbs (ie, access to a Chain-like operation, access to a ReadP-like operation, etc.)
DCS presents itself to VB.NET and C# programmers as a set of classes packaged in a .NET namespace. It presents what is essentially the RPG record-level access model to VB.NET and C# programmers in an API-based implementation model that is a natural for them to understand.
